August 05 Cha-Ching!!! Another Happy 16 Year Old...This afternoon, my daughter called me to let me know that she had a 1:30 interview for her first job ever. She was sooooo excited! She asked me what she should wear and how she should wear her hair, so, between the two of us, we got her spiffied up pretty good...well, at least as well as we could do with her at home and me at work and both of us on our cell phones. lol
About an hour later, she called me and told me that she got the job! Yay for A!!!
The funny thing about her calls is that she RARELY calls me on my phone....most of the time, I get texted. So, when I got the first call, I answered it this way:
"So you're not texting today???"
lol
She said, "Oh, Mom! It's because it's something important!!!"
lol
When she called back to let me know she got the job, I knew before I answered it what she was going to tell me. If she didn't know if she was hired or not, she would've texted me.
Anyway, she said they would add her to the new schedule and let her know within a couple of days when she'll be working. Of course, she forgot to mention that she's working at VBS all week, so I'm thinking I'll have her call them tomorrow morning and let them know that before they start tweaking their schedule.
Oh, and the name of the place she's now working at?
Well, I won't tell you the name of the place, but I will tell you that it has a 'D' and a 'Q' in its name.
Guinevere August 01 You Might Be a Redneck If...Last night at the waitressing job was very unusual. It was in the lower 90s out and just stiflingly hot. And I was assigned to work the outside deck with another girl.
UGH.
No one was sitting outside. No one wanted to sit outside. lol I was told that I would be cut at 6:30 and I could go home. Ok. Good and bad - I get to go home early...but I don't make any money. Ehhhh...whatever.
So, at 6:20, I get a table.
If you've ever muttered your frustrations under your breath, you know how I felt! lol I had stood around for over an hour and a half with nothing to do, then 10 mins. before I'm going to be cut, I get a stinkin' table!
Grrrrrrr!
Anyway, I headed over to greet them and get their drink order and the kid (it's a father and son) heads back inside. I was thinking that he probably was just using the restroom, but his dad said that they would order when he got back because he was asking the chef if he would prepare something a certain way....or something...I didn't quite catch what they were asking about, so oh well...
Anyway, the kid came out and sat down, so I headed over to get their order and one of the food runners came out and headed over to their table.
He said, "The chef said we can't do that because it would be a health code violation. Sorry."
And he left.
I was thinking, "Hmmm.... Wonder what they wanted him to do?"
So, I got their order and they got their food and blah blah blah...
and then I finally had some free time to go find out what the deal was.
Evidently, they had been fishing and these people actually asked the chef if he would clean and grill their fish for them that they had in their truck on ice.
HUH????
Are you kidding me????
lol
I told the other girl I was working with on the deck and one of the other servers who happened to be standing there and all of us were busting up laughing. The inside server, L, said, "That'd be like me going in to McDonald's with a pound of hamburger and saying, 'Hey, could you grill this up for me?'!!!" lol
Too funny.
Oh my goodness.
There are so many different kinds of people in the world....
and, yes, I'm being nice when I say it that way.
Guinevere July 31 I'm Going Insane! And it's not for the reason you're thinking. lol I'm busy, but I can deal with the stress of "busy".
What I absolutely CANNOT stand is when radio stations get stuck on one particular song and play it over...
and over...
and over...
and over...
and over...
and over...
and sometimes, more often than not, more than once or twice in the same day!!!
There is one song in particular that I absolutely CANNOT STAND! It's so annoying...the singer whines her way through the song, sometimes going so high on the scale that I'm sure dogs are suffering.
And the worst part is, I have no idea WHO sings the song or WHAT the name of it is.
I can guarantee you one thing...if I did, I would call the station we listen to in the office and ask them to PLEASE cut that song from their play list!!!
But, I guess there IS one part worse than not knowing what the song is...
my husband LOVES it!
ARGH!!!!!!
Guinevere July 30 Sweet 16 Party PicsSorry to disappoint, but there won't be any pics of my daughter on here. Once I finally (someday) have my own domain and decide who can see what, then maybe I'll get pics up of the kids.
But, for now, here are pics of the party room...sans people. lol
Overall room view:
Individual party table:
Pictures from baby to now. We also had awards and projects that she had won/completed on a table.
And, finally, the cheesecake table:
Everything went really well, like I posted yesterday, but I finally remembered to move the pics to my flash drive so I could get them posted today while I'm at work.
And, yep, the cheesecakes were all yummy....I outdid myself! lol
Guinevere July 29 Sweet 16!Well, the Sweet 16 party for my daughter went off without a hitch! Yay me! I took Friday off work so that I could devote the day to baking cheesecake and working on decorations. A helped me most of the day with the decorations, so it didn't take as long as it could've.
We cut out circles and circles and more circles out of different, bright colored paper to scatter on the tables. (She wanted a "dot" theme.) It took both of us 2 hours to cut out all the circles. Ugh. We were so glad to be done with it! lol After the circles were cut out, I started working on the centerpieces for the tables. I had bought some dotted, metallic gift wrap and used that to wrap pop bottles, then we stuck ribbon covered dowel rods in the bottles with balloons attached at the top. They turned out really cute, I think.
***I should mention here that I keep forgetting to put the party pics on my flash drive so that I can upload them on here once I'm at work...I never have time to get on here at home anymore. lol***
I'll get some pics posted of the decorations hopefully tomorrow.
For just a second, I'm going to rant. For the most part, the party went very well and everyone enjoyed the cheesecake and the time to just sit and visit...BUT...
...BUT...
why don't people RSVP????
Seriously!!!
I sent out BEAUCOUP invitations...and only heard back from like 3 people.
So, here I am planning on potentially 150 people...and guess how many showed up?
Maybe 25.
Why???
Seriously.
Where food is concerned, why wouldn't you RSVP???
I always RSVP...because I understand the point behind it.
Sooooooooooooo.....
think about what that means for a second....
Ready?
I made cheesecake for 150+ people.
Only 25 showed up.
I gave away 4 WHOLE cheesecakes.
And took some home myself for later.
When I look at how I stretched my budget a little past what I was hoping to have to spend...and then I actually gave stuff away, it just makes me mad.
I just don't get it.
But I kept me cool at the party and A had a great time. She got a few gifts and we gave her the gift we got her.
Oh, that's what I needed to post! lol I almost forgot that I left you hanging!
We had her make a list of everything she wanted for her birthday and prioritize the list. We had an idea what we wanted to get her, but we wanted to know what her priority preferences were. Well, they were the same. At the top of her list, she had written:
"1. Purity Ring"
So, that's what we got her. Here's a pic of the ring we picked out.
It's very delicate and dainty. It's white gold and, yes, that's a real diamond...small, but real.
So, all in all, the party went great. Oh, and we even had a bonus. We had the party in the fellowship hall of our church and, while we were decorating, the associate pastor came in and asked if he could use the centerpieces that we had on the tables for a family reunion the next day. I said, "Sure! Would you like us to leave the tablecloths and polka dots for you too?" He said, "Sure! Why not?" So, that meant that we didn't have to clean up and rearrange the fellowship hall when we got done. We just swept up, grabbed our stuff and left! BONUS!
Anyway, I'll get some pics on here tomorrow!
Guinevere July 24 How Do I Slow Down This Merry-Go-Round?You would think that I'd be used to the craziness that is my life right now, but I'm not. lol This week has been busy...again.
I'm sure you're all probably getting tired of hearing how busy I am all the time, but, sheesh! Busy busy busy is all I've got to blog about right now! lol
Saturday afternoon is my daughter's Sweet 16 Party. A couple of months ago, we started doing some pre-planning to decide 1) what her expectations were, 2) what was within our budget, and 3) what I actually would have time to do.
For some reason that only God knows, I agreed that we could have cheesecake instead of a regular birthday cake. She
Why did I agree to this???
Was I insane???
Keeping everything within a budget restricts me from just purchasing some premade cheesecakes from a bakery or, best yet, The Cheesecake Factory....which, obviously, leads you to the correct conclusion that I will be making said cheesecakes myself.
*sigh*
First problem, I can't find my NY style baked cheesecake recipe, so I had to find one online...I did and I HOPE it's a good one.
*sigh*
Second problem, buying the ingredients for this many cheesecakes (12 total, because OF COURSE, I said we would have a variety) is expensive!!! I ended up stretching my budget a bit on this one...
*sigh*
Third problem, not taking into account the TIME that is required PER cheesecake to bake, cool, then move on to the next one...when you only have one springform pan and don't have access to another one.
*sigh*
Obviously, I'm revising some of the no-bake versions and, rather than forming them in my springform pan, will be making them in a couple of my very large rectangular glass pans instead.
I did all the shopping for all the decorations and ingredients on Monday night. On Tues. night, after getting home a bit early from the waitress job, I baked one of the cheesecakes. It baked very well and looks very "gourmet". Cool. Last night, after church, I baked another one. I have to work the waitress job again tonight, so, depending on when I get home, I might be baking another one tonight.
But, tomorrow, I took the day off work from my primary job and I'm not scheduled for my waitress job, so A and I are going to work all day on centerpieces and decorations for the tables and I'll be finishing up baking and assembling all of the cheesecakes throughout the day.
You know, things like this are so chaotic and I tend to stress until I see things start to smooth out. But I really like doing this kind of thing. I've considered working in a catering business before...but then I think, "Yeah, but if I was around food all the time, would I still feel the same way about it?"
I don't know...
Anyway, A's party is going to be ALOT of work...but will also be ALOT of fun. We got her gift in the mail yesterday and I'm not going to post what we got her here simply because she knows about my blog. She also knows where it is... I don't think she reads it, though (she's too preoccupied with her own Facebook page and her mom's life is boring to her, I'm sure...lol), but just in case... I'll let all of you be surprised with her. lol
(So, A, in case you DO read this....HA HA HA.)
After the party, we'll be running her back to our house with 4 of her friends. One of them can't spend the night, but the other 3 can. It should be interesting. We told them they could have the basement for the night, but I'm thinking now that they'll have more room if they stay in the living room. We can move the coffee table out and they can watch movies all night if they want. (Guess I should go buy some popcorn! lol)
Anyway, I'll make sure we get plenty of pics and I'll post later in the weekend.
As a side note, please pray for my sanity. lol
Guinevere July 21 More to Come...This weekend proved to be just as busy as most of my other weekends, but it was fun at the same time.
Friday night, I worked the waitress job and got off work right around 10:30 (amazing!) and went home with some very good tippage.
On Sat. morning, after eating some breakfast, I actually was motivated to get some things cleared and moved out of my way in the basement where S (the Stars Club girl) and I would be meeting to go over her binder. There was no way the area was going to be spotless, but I did manage to get my work table cleaned off and a reasonable amount of stuff put away. (I didn't want to work with her upstairs because that would mean no one being able to watch tv or hang out in the living room at all while she was there...she's very easily distracted.)
S and I finished ALL of her back work and got her completely updated in about 4 hours...straight! She did very well!
She and A tried to paint Tobi's toenails, but puppy was not having any of that! lol
Right around 6, her parents showed up for dinner. I had decided ahead of time that I'd like to have them over sometime and this was a nice opportunity.
We had lasagne, which I had made up Friday morning and had ready to just pop in the oven. A made some homemade shortcakes while I got my area ready downstairs (strawberries were on sale again, so I bought a 4 lb. package!). I'm so glad she loves to cook!
While the girls were playing with Tobi and we were waiting for S's parents to show up, I got the french bread ready.
Dinner turned out really nice. Lasagne with garlic cheese toast, salad, and homemade strawberry shortcake for dessert. Yummmm!
A side benefit was that N got off work early enough to be able to have dinner with the rest of us. On Sats., he usually gets off work too late to have dinner with us.
We had a really nice evening visiting.
On Sun., after church, M and I rushed home for a quick lunch so we could make it to a matinee showing of "The Dark Knight". It was very good...very action packed. Heath Ledger's Joker was very dark and sometimes very disturbing. I'm glad I saw it in the theater, though.
Right after the movie, we had to stop at the church for a VBS leader's training meeting. There were 4 scheduled, but we only had to go to one. Unfortunately, this was the only one I could work into my schedule, so we had to rush back right after the movie. Thankfully, we had no evening plans, so we were able to enjoy a nice, quiet evening at home Sun. night. I worked a crossword and read a little bit while M worked on some things in his den.
Oh, and one really silly, thoughtless, "blonde" thing I did this weekend was A and I went to the library and I picked out 4 audio books to listen to for the next couple of weeks. Only problem is, I don't have a CD walkman OR an IPod to load them onto! lol Sooooooo....tonight, when A and I go out to get some of her birthday party decorations and goodie ingredients at the store, I'm going to stop and see if I can find a cheap one "for now".
Sheesh. I'd lose my head if it wasn't screwed on tight.
Guinevere July 13 Oh Yeah!I was really hoping to get on here yesterday and blog about my morning, but I didn't make it. My stomach has been kind of "ooky" all weekend, so I've spent most of my time taking advantage of quiet times to rest.
Yesterday morning, I had another Stars Club work day. But this time, I only had 2 girls show up. I was a little disappointed, needless to say, but we got SOOOOOO much done. Both of them are completely caught up with their lessons now. One of the girls has already been crowned an Honor Star, but just needed to finish up some "loose ends" in her Stars binder. The other girl is well on her way to being an Honor Star next year if I can keep her on track.
We did a fun craft too. I dug out some of my embroidery floss and we made friendship bracelets. This was probably the only time that I've introduced this kind of craft and the girls caught right on! Usually, I have one or two girls constantly asking me for help. lol
It was a good day.
This morning, we had a guest speaker at church. He is actually the pastor at another church in town. When I first saw him in the foyer when I came downstairs from Sunday School, I would NEVER have guessed that he was the guest speaker OR a pastor. The man had dreadlocks almost to his knees!!! Seriously!!! They weren't the real poofy ones, but they WERE dreadlocks.
Once he, Brian, started speaking and sharing some of his background, that part kind of made sense. He used to do street ministry in the inner city...and he also works with another guy who has a prison ministry.
His message was so incredible...and so simple.
He talked about how we need to be fully committed to God above everything else and begin to really understand what it means to be faithful to Him. Our definition of faithfulness and God's definition are 2 different things.
I can't even begin to try to convey all of what he said, I just know that I sat there thinking, "Wow! I really needed to hear this today!"
He even started his message out by saying that he was speaking to person we really are...the one that we don't let other people see. He said, "I'm not talking to the people that I see sitting in these chairs right in front of me, but I'm talking to those people that you are when you walk out of this building and go home."
It was awesome!
At the end of service, he made an altar call for anyone who wanted prayer for an increase in their commitment to God. I went forward, but Brian didn't pray for me, his associate pastor, Manuel, who came with him did.
I don't know how many of you believe in the gifts of the Spirit being active now like they were right after Jesus, but, when Manuel started praying for me, both of us broke into our prayer languages...or tongues.
I received a word from God and I am holding fast to it!
Oh, and the praise and worship was AWESOME today! Mike was leading...and when he leads, he likes to rock the house! lol We did some Third Day versions of some hymns.
Guinevere July 11 Remember the Days of Vinyl?Cool article:
I grew up listening to my Mom's vinyl LPs...everything from Loretta Lynn to Jan & Dean. I still remember jammin' out to 'Monster Mash' and 'Big Girls Don't Cry' on the old turntable. lol
